Schwabinger Tor at EXPO REAL
Munich, October 2011 - Its location between Leopoldstrasse and Berliner Strasse will make
Schwabinger Tor the gateway to Munich city centre as well as a lively quarter in its own right. The site was previously occupied by a Holiday Inn hotel and a Metro hypermarket, both of which will be abandoning the area completely. The urban, luxurious plans for the new design of this space will do justice to the exclusivity of the address and remove the barriers between it and the neighbouring “Berliner Strasse” residential area. Thus districts that were formerly divided will once again be connected.
Unique design sets new standards for urban living
Munich architects 03 Architekten won the planning competition back in 2007 with a design that combines all aspects of urban living in unique ways: living, working, shopping and going out. A total of nine buildings stand offset from one another to create open squares and alleys, offering a new level of accessibility and, at the same time, a modern reminder of Old Schwabing. Three highlights make reference to the city skyline, thus rounding off the overall image. to top

The plans are also characterised by a successful horizontal division of use: the ground floors of each building will have a strongly public character, with shops, restaurants, hotel lobbies and theatre foyers, ensuring a lively atmosphere as people come and go. The middle floors are reserved for offices, while the upper floors are primarily earmarked for residences.
A particular attraction is the expansion of green spaces. With their design concept for its open areas, Freising-based landscape architects Ver.de are providing an essential element of the high quality of life and pleasant stays that you can expect at Schwabinger Tor. Like the architectural concept, the garden design also makes allowances for existing structures. For example, the biotope and the avenues of Leopoldstrasse and Berliner Strasse have been elegantly taken up and integrated. Each of six squares is its own little work of art and thus an allusion to Schwabing’s legendary reputation as an artists’ quarter. ... more
