Schwabinger Tor,
Munich
Schwabinger Tor is a modern city district, a new centre just outside Munich's inner city. Modelled on examples of historically evolved city centres, it unites all the many facets of big-city life, with homes, workplaces, shops, culture and leisure all encompassed by an exceptional architectonic concept. The quality of urban life takes on a new dimension here.
The site extends between Leopoldstraße and Berliner Straße. Planned with existing structures in mind, the new building complex will blend into the cityscape and reconnect districts that had been divided. A succession of squares, narrow streets and new green areas will take shape here - on a site that will be completely free of cars but nevertheless provide ideal transport connections. Flats and offices, hotel and theatre, cafés and shops will upgrade the entire neighbourhood. Preliminary construction will commence in 2011.
